Ages 18 and up. Scratchboard originated as a form of engraving that replaced woodcarvings for reproduction. Today, the thick clay tablets have evolved to thin, but stiff, boards that anyone can use to create amazing artwork. Scratchboard is coated with a type of black ink over a white (or sometimes metallic) background. To draw, simply scratch off the ink with a wooden or metal tool to create a positive/negative effect.
