The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom
In 1961, Sarah M. Broom's mother, Ivory Mae, buys a shotgun house in the promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and builds her world inside of it. It is the height of the Space Race, the neighborhood is home to a major NASA plant, and the postwar optimism seems assured. Widowed, Ivory Mae remarries to Sarah's father, Simon Broom; their combined family eventually numbers twelve children. But when Simon dies six months after Sara's birth, the yellow house becomes Ivory Mae's thirteenth and most unruly child.
