Simple Joys

By: Harper Heath

2024

I find joy in the simple things

Though they may not be the stuff of kings.

Finding beauty in the mundane;

Gives me a joy that is hard to explain.

The glow of candles when it’s late at night

Or thinking of a story I can’t wait to write

Freshly shaved legs on freshly cleaned sheets

And the smell of spring rain as it covers the streets

The sound of butter being spread on crispy toast

A show that has me fully engrossed

Men in books that have me totally smitten

And reading a love story that’s been thoughtfully written

A bowl of pasta being filled to the brim

Being in a theater when the lights start to dim

Going to Bath and Body Works to test the perfumes

Or watching a period film with accurate costumes

Going to a drive-through that just made fresh fries

Finding a pair of pants that are exactly my size

Taking a hot shower after playing in the snow

And the short moment when sprinkler mist makes a small rainbow

We often overlook the little things throughout our day;

Because we’ve been told their unimportant or cliche.

But I say embrace the cliche, and all the noise

Life isn’t about extravagance- it’s about simple joys
